Hank had to take the route through Selma but chose to go up Highway 65 to get to Muscle Shoals much faster. That didn’t turn out very well. Hank and Ollie were in the lead vehicle. The pine trees, red dirt side roads and billboards were all there was to see for ninety nine percent of the trip. Ollie’s snoring alerted Hank several times that his lookout had dozed off again.

They’d been lucky so far during their run at night through Birmingham. They’d only run into two roadblocks and ran through them at thirty miles an hour. Hank saw they were only fifty-five gallon drums with the guards warming their hands by the fire coming from them. The guards saw the truck barreling down on them and scattered like cockroaches just before the drums exploded in old ash and sparks.

Hank turned to poke Ollie in the ribs when the windshield shattered and glass peppered his face. An ear-splitting scream told him Ollie was injured. Then another bullet blew the windshield out in front of him slamming his head back against the headrest. The truck ran off the road but he shook his head and got back on the pavement. He was blind in his left eye and his head felt like it had just exploded. The gas petal pushed to the floor, Hank was soon a few miles from the ambush site with the other vehicles on his tail. “Ollie, are you okay?”

The answer was too weak to hear, so Hank turned off the road, crashing through the roadside chain link fence to stop in a copse of trees. The vehicle lurched to a stop and Hank turned his attention to Ollie. Her hand was pressed against her left shoulder to staunch the bleeding. “Honey hold on while I get the first aid kit.”

Hank applied a bandage to the entrance and exit wounds and held pressure against her shoulder wound while hoping the pressure would stop the bleeding from her back wound. He drove back to the road and sped away. Hank saw the exit ahead for Barber Road and Highway 31 through the red film blurring his vision a few minutes later. He made the turn on two wheels with the other vehicles following behind him. Hank took a right turn onto Barber Road and a quick left onto Highway 31. Seeing a subdivision on the right, he decided to take a chance. He knew Ollie needed a warm, dry place to recuperate. He made another right in the subdivision and was relieved that the subdivision appeared to be abandoned.
